Money laundering should truly be considered a global phenomenon

Money laundering should truly be considered a global phenomenon of tremendous reach and it is being inadvertently assisted by the international financial community which is a 24-hours a day business. The same technology that facilitates legitimate capital traveling around the world in seconds is now routinely used in sophisticated money laundering schemes.

The development of new technologies such as electronic cash, smart cards based on electronic payment systems, and Internet banking are increasing the ability to rapidly transfer large sums of money. At the same time, these technologies are opening the gates for criminals and terrorists to infiltrate legitimate financial channels. Consequently, bank regulatory and law enforcement agencies are monitoring, both domestically and internationally, new legal and technological developments, and regulatory enforcement measures are being taken with respect to these businesses.
